This past Sunday, Hollywood’s greatest gathered at the Dolby Theater in downtown Los Angeles to celebrate the highly anticipated 85th Academy Awards. While the industry’s finest enjoyed the show, viewers from around the world came together on social media sites such as Twitter and Instagram to catch up on their favorite celebrities, as well as to join the global conversation.
The social media sphere was busting at the seams with various commentary, and everything from Seth MacFarlane’s racy jokes to jaw-dropping musical acts was discussed on Twitter. As always, celebrities weren’t afraid to join the conversation and give followers a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes actions via their social media accounts. Over the course of the night there were over 8.9 million tweets regarding the Oscars, with 2.1 million tweets during the red carpet, and 6.8 million tweets during the actual show, according to E! Channel.

Adele’s beautiful performance of “Skyfall” was one of the top moments on the social media sphere, with 82,300 tweets per minute.
The show’s host Seth MacFarlane led much of the conversation on Twitter and Facebook, as well. However, unfortunately for him, the conversation was mostly negative, with only about 20 percent saying they enjoyed his performance. Well some of his jokes went off brilliantly, others were a flop, such as his joke regarding Lincoln.
Actress Jennifer Lawrence generated around 71,600 tweets for her win of best actress.
The top moment of the night however, came when First Lady Michele Obama presented the award for best picture to Argo generating over 85,300 tweets!
The Academy Awards did a great job of maximizing the use of social media outlets and viewers were able to follow all the night’s action in several different ways. The Academy Awards used the Twitter account @TheAcademy to update viewers instantly on all the Oscar winners, as well as up-to-date moments on the red carpet.
The Academy Awards also offered followers an Oscars app to download, which was available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or iPad mini. The app featured info on nominees, movie trailers, exclusive videos, as well as access to the show’s after-parties.
