Technology has made its mark at 2013 New York Fashion Week with the rise of social media on the runway. Not everyone is able to hit the tents to attend the ultra exclusive and incredibly posh fashion shows.
But now, thanks to social media, fashionistas can keep track of events and viral moments of their favorite designers through various social media platforms.
The 2013 New York Fashion Week generated over 650,000 fashion-related tweets, including 50 top fashion accounts live tweeting to provide users with the latest looks coming down the runway. Hashtags #dayinthelife and #FNO were used to curate tweets, producing double the tweets as the previous year.
Top fashion accounts live tweeted during the week’s events and many utilized not only Twitter, but YouTube and Instagram, by showing in-depth looks behind the scenes with photos and interviews, as well as live streaming their shows.
Two brands, Badgley Mischka and Bergdorf Goodman co-previewed their collections exclusively on Pinterest. They used hashtag #BGBADGLEY, attracting approximately 39,788 followers after pinning only 42 items.
Certain designers gained a landslide of followers after debuting their most recent line. Designer Victoria Beckham gained 53,700 new followers, designer Michael Kors gained 15,300 and designer Marc Jacobs gained 5,300 new followers during fashion week.
Another social media platform that was utilized during the 2013 New York Fashion Week was Instagram, which was used not only by viewers in attendance, but by professional photographers as well.
73 Instagram photos from New York Fashion Week have been accepted into Getty Images’ Library from pro photographers. Even major news outlets are utilizing the photo sharing application—The New York Times (@NYTimesFashion) has an account solely dedicated to fashion, and it currently has 188,449 followers and 480 photos posted.
