Twitter engagement can have a huge impact on your social media success. When you’re building your Twitter presence, it can be hard to gain new followers, not to mention make sure that the ones you already have are engaging with your tweets.

Here are a few guidelines to make sure that your Twitter engagement continues to grow.

1. Post Often

If you’re not consistently active on Twitter, your followers will be able to tell. Posting intermittently or simply not at all will make your feed look like a ghost town, giving other users little incentive to follow you. Simply put, the more you tweet, the more followers you will have.

That being said, it is important to keep your tweets interesting, and not to overdo it. If you tweet too much, you will actually run the risk of losing followers. Striking the right balance here is important. Also, make sure you take the time to engage with those who do share or respond to your tweets, either by thanking them or furthering the conversation.

2. Time Your Tweets

The majority of Twitter users are active during regular business hours. Tweeting within this time frame will optimize your tweet visibility, as this is when the majority of people are online. If you’re tweeting in the middle of the night, your tweets will not have nearly as much impact.

3. Improve Your Twitter Bio

Since your bio is one of the first things other Twitter users will see, it’s important that it contains the most important details about who you are. You should include your job title, relevant information on the types of tweets you’ll be sharing, and any interesting hobbies you have.

Feel free to establish your credibility by including important accomplishments, as well. If your bio has got the right keywords, it will be easier for people in your niche to find and follow you.

4. Ask for Action

Let your existing followers help boost your engagement by simply ending a tweet with “Please retweet.” This call to action results in far more retweets than not asking does. If you’re looking for a quick way to boost engagement on your tweets, asking for help definitely won’t hurt.

5. Cross Promote with Other Social Media

If you have other existing social media accounts, like Facebook or Instagram, use them as a launching pad for gaining more Twitter followers. Be sure to link to your Twitter account on your profile and contact pages on all other Social Media, and make use of the various apps and settings that allow you to automatically republish your tweets on Facebook. Also, feel free to add your Twitter information to your email signature and business cards. Any way you go about it, cross promoting your Twitter profile will only lead to more followers.

6. Hashtag it Up

Hashtags are one of the easiest ways to become a part of the most current and viral conversations on Twitter. Not only does a hashtag make your tweet instantly searchable, but many Twitter users actually follow specific hashtags as a way to keep up with topics they’re interested in. Incorporating these hashtags in your posts will connect you with your ideal audience and boost your visibility. As always, using the right hashtags (i.e. topical, relevant keywords rather than jokey phrases) is key to harnessing their power.

7. Strike the Balance Between Informative and Personable

Smart Twitter users deliver informative tweets with a personal touch. Strike a balance between delivering value in your tweets (as in information, news, or education), and keeping your followers engaged with a relaxed and personable voice. Using humor will keep your posts entertaining for your followers. Images are also something you should include in tweets as often as possible. Images are a quick way to grab the attention of your followers, making them a solid bet for boosting Twitter engagement.

The bottom line is that building a solid Twitter following is an important part of a successful social media presence. While gaining Twitter followers can be a slow process at first, if you incorporate some of these tips, over they will come.
